Mankind, Humankind, and Gender
Humankind, Humankind, and Gender Humankind, Humankind, and Gender Humankind, Humankind, and Gender By Maeve Maddox A peruser berates me for not having utilized ââ¬Å"gender impartial languageâ⬠in an ongoing post: In your meaning of eschatology you utilize the word humankind. You run a composing site, if you don't mind use sexually unbiased language if you don't mind it isnââ¬â¢t that troublesome. My perspectives on gendered language are maybe too free to even think about meeting the more outrageous prerequisites of political rightness. For instance, I donââ¬â¢t see anything amiss with utilizing the word humankind in the feeling of ââ¬Å"all individuals living on the earth.â⬠As I comprehend the word, it originates from an Old English build wherein man implies individual. I don't face words like poetess and creator, which I accept pass on a feeling of loftiness. I censure the articulation ââ¬Å"woman doctorâ⬠used to show the sex of the specialist as opposed to the doctorââ¬â¢s clinical claim to fame. Then again, words like administrator strike me as faintly preposterous. Furthermore, endeavors to make an interpretation of the Bible into ââ¬Å"gender impartial languageâ⬠appear to be somewhat misled, thinking about the man centric perspective of the substance. I guess that I should substitute mankind for humankind. I donââ¬â¢t see the point. The word human gets from the Latin word for ââ¬Å"manâ⬠: homo, There was an Old English related, guma (pl. guman), that likewise implied ââ¬Å"man.â⬠It gets by in our promise husband, ââ¬Å"the brideââ¬â¢s man.â⬠Inordinate worry over ââ¬Å"gender unbiased languageâ⬠every now and again results in unidiomatic English as well as pointless changes of valuable and harmless words. This is a composing webpage, however it is likewise a blog. Perusers need to expect that some sentiment will illuminate the posts. I feel a commitment to check my conversations of standard use by counseling the OED, the Chicago Manual of Style, and other perceived specialists. In the matter of what does and doesnââ¬â¢t consider ââ¬Å"gender impartial language,â⬠in any case, I feel no impulse to become tied up with the universe of Chairperson Greenspan and Every man and lady for oneself. I donââ¬â¢t happen to see each word with a syllable spelled m-a-n as an attack against womankind. (Would it be a good idea for us to in any case be utilizing the word lady?) As I would like to think, humanity is no more ââ¬Å"gender neutralâ⬠than humankind. Both mean the very same thing, and both get from the word ââ¬Å"man.â⬠Need to improve your English in a short time a day? Recruiting Unqualified College Applicants
Recruiting Unqualified College Applicants May 14, 2013 There is an article in The Chronicle of Higher Education by Jon Boeckenstedt, the associate vice president for enrollment management at De Paul University, entitled Lets Bring Clarity to Undergraduate Admissions which discusses how the current college admissions system is broken and in need of a fix. What we found most interesting in Mr. Boeckenstedts article is the following comment on colleges recruiting unqualified college applicants: Occasionally colleges knowingly send materials to students who have almost no chance of being admitted. In what can only be called a disgrace to higher education, the students serve an important role in catering to the sub-industry that creates rewards and incentives for rejecting the largest percentage of applicants. Highly selective universities need to stop recruiting unqualified college applicants. This practice is unethical. Well said, Mr. Boeckenstedt. Its something weve been writing about for years and the more folks in the college admissions community that put this in writing, the better. The only thing we would correct in this statement is the usage of the word occasionally. Mr. Boeckenstedt is being too nice. Highly selective colleges dont occasionally send recruiting materials to students who have zero shot of ever gaining admission (simply to boost their application numbers and thereby lower their admission rate). They do it every year in droves. Highly selective colleges send brochures to students whose SAT scores fall well below their mean SAT score, knowing full well that student has no shot of getting in. They do this only to boost their US News World Report ranking. Its ridiculous. A few colleges have taken a stand and said were not doing this anymore. Weve highlighted a couple of these colleges in the past, but these colleges are the exception to the rule, not the rule. Highly selective colleges need to show more empathy to seventeen year-old high school students going through a very stressful time in their lives. They shouldnt be getting the hopes up of these students who, in reality, have no shot of ever getting in to their institution. Its wrong. Its unethical. Thank you to Mr. Boeckenstedt for drawing attention to this practice. And remember, just because you receive brochures from a college, that doesnt mean that college actually thinks you can get in. It merely means they want you to apply. They want anyone to apply. Heck, they even get an application fee with each application. Its a business with a bottom line.

My Experience As A Social Work Student At New York University
My Experience as a Social Work Student at New York University Choosing a career is not easy. I had a lot of people giving me suggestions and advice to choose the right profession. My psychologist convinced me to pursue my master in social work. During my undergrad I was interested in psychology, but social work seemed like an easy path to become a therapist. However, I have learned that social work is not as easy as I thought it would be, and that it is the main key for many opportunities to succeed and to make the difference. As a social work student, I have discovered that social work is an overlooked profession. Many people used to ask me ââ¬Å"what can you do with a social work degree?â⬠when the real question is ââ¬Å"what can you not do with a social work degree?â⬠Nowadays, we are surrounded by social workers; they work in the schools, universities, hospitals, courts, prisons, different community based organizations and more. People also said that ââ¬Å"social work doesnââ¬â¢t pay enoughâ⬠. However, what they do not know is that every day as a social worker is rewarding; knowing that you have made the difference in someoneââ¬â¢s life is priceless. Both of my internships have helped me to develop and improve my skills as a social worker. When I first started social work school, I wanted to work exclusively with children and providing psychotherapy only. The Diagnostic Statistical Manual For Mental Health
The Diagnostic Statistical Manual is an extremely important asset to the mental health field. The DSM was created to assist clinicians in diagnosing and recognizing mental illness in their clients. It has been used for over six decades and there are a total of five editions. Each edition has some updated and new information that wasnââ¬â¢t included in the last edition. The reason for the changes in the DSM is because the mental health field is always evolving. Thereââ¬â¢s new information thatââ¬â¢s discovered from research and is implemented into the next DSM. All mental health clinicians have the common goal of providing treatment to their clients in the best and most effect way possible. Homosexuality was once labeled a mental illness in the DSM, but in a later edition it was removed from the DSM. In May 2013, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) published the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). This culminated 12 years of work with the stated goal of ââ¬Å"enhancing the clinical usefulness of DSM-5 as a guide in the diagnosis of mental disordersâ⬠(APA, 2013, p. 5). The latest edition of the DSM is DSM-5 it represents some of the most current information on clinical psychology. The group wanted to establish any influences that music might have on fashion. We hoped our questions would expose us to a wide range of people and their opinions about music. The key elements that we needed to establish became how many and what group of people music influenced most on their fashion choices. Distributing the surveys using an online free survey maker, we each posted it on Backbone, Namespace, and Blackboard. For people we wanted to survey, but did not have web facilities, we printed them out and acquired their answers that way. At the end of the survey, the team gathered 88 responses, 55 from females and 33 from males. When we tallied the results, we were shocked to see how honest people were and how much people really believed that the music they listen to connects to their fashion choices.Nineteen teenagers between the ages of 13-18 responded to our survey: 12 of them prefer to wear Reportable as the other seven chose to wear Levi or Sean John. We received 52 responses between the ages of 19-25. Most of them prefer to wear named brand clothing such as Airman Exchange and Sean John. Only a few of them said they would prefer to wear Reportable and Levi. We had nine females and males between the ages of 26-35. Six of them prefer to wear Reportable and Levi and the other 5 prefer to wear Airman exchange and Sean John. Eight responses were from females and males between the ages 36 and up.This age group prefers to wear any kind of clothing, as you see they have no preferences on any reticular kind of clothing. (See Figure 1) Figure 1- Clothing Preferences by Age Different age groups where asked what types of named brands they prefer to wear. The survey gave some useful information based on the results of the questions asked. In the 13-18 age groups, 12 out of 19 prefer Hip Hop music over Country. Ages 19-25, only 11 out of 52 listen to country music. That leaves 41 listening to Hip Hop. Only 9 people were in the age group 26-35, out of 9 responses only 3 listen to hip hop and 6 listen to country. The age group 36 and up listen to both hip Hop and country music. See figure 2) The reason we found this information interesting is because it fits perfectly with stereotypical Judgments we have on our society today. When we looked at participants surveys individually we noticed that the age groups between 13-25 that listen to country and live in the country are more likely to listen to country music and wear clothing such as reportorial, Levi, and wrangler. Also the age groups between 13-25 that listen to hip hop and live in the city prefer to wear reportage, Airman exchange, and Sean John. The age group between 26-35 had a lot of mixed results. On the other hand the age group that is 36+ that live in either the country or city listen to both genres and have no preference on the kind of clothing they prefer to wear . Figure 2- Music and Ages Different age groups where asked what type of genre they prefer to listen to. Young people today are easily influenced by what they see and hear. Younger people may want to dress according to the fashion choices their favorite musician may wear or even the named brands that are marketed by these musicians. Their interests and opinions can swing wide depending on what is popular at the time.On the other hand, older people Just want to live life and not worry about what other people wear. They are the least influenced by music and tend to choose their own fashion according to comfort and to their own personal taste. Although music does obviously affect individuals, the said affect varies according to the age group of the listener. Popular societal clothing trends tend to evolve with the music as well as with the age of the population. Age is the biggest key when it comes to the strong convergence between music and fashion.
